Protecting Local Reefs & Beaches

SAFEGUARDING SHORES,PRESERVING REEFS,
PROTECTING THE FUTURE

The coral reefs of the Gulf of Aqaba are not only breathtaking, but also the most resilient in the world. These reefs have shown an incredible ability to endure rising ocean temperatures, withstanding increases of up to 5°C above their historical averages. However, even with such resilience, these reefs are under threat as global sea temperatures have risen by approximately 1.1°C over the past century, and the effects of climate change continue to intensify quickly.

These resilient reefs have earned their place as a vital global asset for marine conservation. Scientists are hopeful that they can offer insights into how corals may survive in warmer waters, potentially becoming a lifeline for coral ecosystems worldwide. Yet, despite their strength, these reefs face growing threats from pollution, illegal fishing, human activity and mass tourism.

Hemaya is leading the charge in protecting these fragile ecosystems by organizing patrols, clean-up campaigns, and awareness programs. Working with local Bedouins, authorities, and conservation experts, Hemaya tackled illegal fishing practices such as harpoon fishing, abandoned nets, and unauthorized fishing cages (جوبيه الصيد), by doing patrols.

Hemaya has also conducted shoreline clean-ups, eliminating plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other pollutants that harm marine life. In addition, Hemaya engaged in educational campaigns to raise awareness and foster environmental responsibility among locals, tourists, and businesses.

By combining direct action with education, Hemaya, in collaboration with local communities and authorities, is dedicated to protecting and preserving the region’s beaches and reefs, which is a vital ecosystem that support marine biodiversity and stand as a beacon of hope for global coral conservation.
